Software is comprised of source code, which is compiled into a working program. Traditionally, people have acquired, installed and run the compiled programs in their finished form. However, a range of technical, social and economic factors – foremost among them a greater, general interconnectivity – have led to a development whereby the source code itself is made available to share, adapt and reuse.
